Milan, May 6, 2025 – The opening of Made in Steel 2025, the 11th edition of the international Conference & Exhibition dedicated to the steel supply chain and organized by siderweb – The Steel Community, opened to record numbers and surpassed expectations.

This was underscored in the opening remarks by Paolo Morandi, CEO of siderweb and Made in Steel, who highlighted that the international event brought together 387 exhibitors—21% more than in 2023—with 35% coming from abroad. “Made in Steel is a forum for connection and dialogue across the entire steel supply chain,” Morandi stated. “It takes place at a crucial time for the Italian and European steel industries, amid a highly complex scenario marked by significant threats and uncertainties— challenges that may also give rise to new opportunities.” The eleventh edition of Made in Steel, titled “The Beauty of Steel” and curated by artistic director Giorgio Guidi, aims to celebrate the unique essence of steel—its creativity, its embodiment of Italian craftsmanship, and its relevance to the present moment. “We do not know what the future will look like,” said siderweb CEO Paolo Morandi in his closing remarks, “but we are convinced that steel will continue to be an ally of progress and of people. And we believe we can begin building that future—step by step—together.”

“The Beauty of Steel” serves as the guiding theme of Made in Steel 2025, shaping the event’s content and narrative. The eleventh edition of the international Conference & Exhibition is dedicated to celebrating steel as a material that supports progress and improves people’s lives, while also highlighting its strength, modernity, and brilliance. The theme invites participants to explore the intrinsic and cultural value of a material destined to play a central role in a sustainable future, thanks to its infinite recyclability.

Speaking from the siderweb Conference Room stage, Federacciai President Antonio Gozzi emphasized the strategic relevance of Made in Steel to the sector: “In these eleven years, Made in Steel has been much more than a trade fair. It has been a place for reflection, a laboratory of ideas, and a platform for dialogue across the entire steel value chain. It has helped to foster a new awareness—one that today allows us to say with pride that the Italian steel industry is a European and global leader, particularly in the field of decarbonization.” Gozzi went on to urge decisive action at the European level: “We can no longer accept that our green electric arc furnaces pay the highest energy prices in Europe, nor that our strategic raw material—scrap—is allowed to exit the continent unchecked. It is time to raise our voices against ideological inertia and technocratic resistance that are obstructing real progress. What we need is a cultural shift—a true revolution in European industrial thinking. Italy’s manufacturing sector is simply asking for one thing: fair rules to allow fair competition, and the opportunity to continue innovating—not only in terms of environmental sustainability, but also in economic and social dimensions.”

Assofermet President Cinzia Vezzosi also highlighted the strategic importance of the event: “Made in Steel has become a gathering point for the entire supply chain—a place where all its segments come together. This year’s theme is ambitious, but there is great beauty in steel. It is a material that can adapt to changing contexts while maintaining its core properties. Its resilience is its true beauty, and it reflects the character of the entire industry. Our companies have responded to difficulties with major investments and the ability to adapt and innovate without losing competitiveness. But to continue on this path, we need a stronger role from Europe. Assofermet is calling for a revision of the European Steel Action Plan, which has proven disappointing for both producers and steel distributors and service centers. We urge the EU to redesign the plan by introducing measures to stimulate steel demand within the Union and to adopt a new perspective on scrap, treating it as a strategic—not critical—resource.”

Carlo Bonomi, President of fieramilano, positioned the event as a strategic compass: “Made in Steel is now a key observatory for the steel sector’s future. Steel shapes the industry and manufacturing of tomorrow. Everything starts with this material, which is not merely a raw input—it’s a key to interpreting our era. At this international Conference & Exhibition dedicated to the steel supply chain, we are truly discussing the industry of the future. The companies in this sector deserve our recognition for what they are doing, and what they are facing, on behalf of the entire country. Because without industry, there is no Italy—and without steel, there is no industry.”

Marco Mandelli, Chief Corporate & Investment Banking Officer at BPER Banca, underlined the importance of financial institutions remaining closely connected to the steel ecosystem: “Our partnership with siderweb is strategic because it allows us to understand the dynamics of the steel supply chain and to demonstrate our commitment to companies in all segments—production, distribution, service centers, and scrap.” Mandelli emphasized the bank’s long-standing support for a sector that remains vital to Italian manufacturing: “We have allocated significant financing tools over time, and we continue to invest in understanding a sector marked by strong cyclicality—an approach that requires tailored financial solutions. Although 2024 was a difficult year, we foresee a modest recovery in 2025. The industry has consistently shown a willingness to invest in line with market trends, particularly the energy transition—today, over 80% of production comes from electric arc furnaces. At BPER, we are already exceeding our natural market share in steel-related credit exposure, and we intend to further strengthen our role. We see positive prospects ahead—with opportunities to seize and synergies to build alongside entrepreneurs in the sector.”
