Flero (Brescia), 21 February 2024 - The eleventh edition of Made in Steel, the international Conference & Exhibition dedicated to the steel supply chain designed and managed by siderweb - La community dell'acciaio, will take place on 6, 7 and 8 May 2025. The event will be hosted in Halls 22 and 24 of fieramilano Rho (Milan), covering a total exhibition area of over 35,000 square metres.
Following the 2021 edition, which came at the tail end of the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns, and the 2023 edition, marked by the recovery and renewed confidence, Made in Steel 2025 is announced in a moment of great uncertainty, characterized by economic slowdown, conflicts and global geopolitical crises.
"2024 opened under the banner of caution. But under the veil of a wait-and-see attitude, steel is in great ferment. Decarbonisation, driven by the increasingly stringent European regulatory framework, is proving essential to remain competitive on the market. The energy crisis has prompted investments in energy efficiency and alternative sources. Process innovation through Industry 5.0 goes beyond artificial intelligence, putting the human being back at the centre of processes. Made in Steel is being organized in this context of rapid change and new challenges and confirms once again its intent: that of being an arena for business and exchange between operators, and at the same time a place to meet and exchange strategic information and points of view on the medium- and long-term future of the national and European steel industry. The purpose is to face together, young people, women and men of steel, the challenges of the future, "says Paolo Morandi, CEO of Made in Steel and siderweb.
Reservations for exhibition spaces will be possible from May 2024, one year before the event.
The 2023 edition was the best in Made in Steel's history of almost 20 years, with 317 participating companies, up from the previous record in 2019, including more than 25% foreign companies (in 2019 the share was 23%) representing 21 countries. A total of 18,467 attendances were recorded, a marked increase compared to 2019. On top of this there were the visitors and exhibitors from Lamiera, who had been granted free entry to Made in Steel. The 2025 edition of Made in Steel will also be held in partial conjunction with Lamiera (6-9 May 2025), the international exhibition promoted by UCIMU-Sistemi per produrre dedicated to the sheet metal forming machine tool industry.
THE ECONOMIC CONTEXT - Italy produced 1.64 million tons of steel in January 2024, up by 5.9% (source: Federacciai).
In 2023, national steel mills produced 21 million tonnes of steel, 2.5% less than in 2022 and 13.7% less than in 2021 (-3.5 million tonnes). Excluding 2020, steel production in 2023 was the lowest in the last ten years. Specifically, 11.7 million tonnes of long products (-2.9% compared to 2022) and 9.5 million tonnes of flat products (-0.1%) were produced in 2023.
According to the World Steel Association, the EU-27 produced 41.7 million tonnes of steel in 2023 (-7.4%).
2024 will not be the year of recovery of real steel consumption in Europe. This is predicted by Eurofer, the European steel producers' association, in the latest edition of its 'Economic and Steel Market Outlook'. European demand will again be negative this year (-0.4%), as it was in 2022 (-2%) and 2023 (-3.1%). The outlook envisages a contraction in Q1 and Q4 (-1.6% and -3.8% respectively compared to the same period of the previous year) and a recovery towards the middle of the year (+3.1% and +0.4% in Q2 and Q3). The outlook for 2025 is more positive: +1.3% compared to 2024. However, the recovery will be concentrated in the second half of next year.
Domestic carbon steel prices have been stable since the beginning of the year, as certified by the Carbon Steel Index (the index that captures the trends of finished carbon steel products in Italy) developed by siderweb.
In 2022, the Italian steel industry generated a turnover of 93.3 billion euros, up 16.6% compared to the previous year (according to the figures of the 2023 edition of Bilanci d'Acciaio, siderweb's main survey analysing the economic and financial results of the steel industry from a strategic and prospective point of view). Profit was up 39% from EUR 3.6 billion to around EUR 5 billion. Ebitda improved by 24% from EUR 7.5 billion to EUR 9.3 billion.
