Acciaierie Venete and the New Investments

In order to meet a changing market, Acciaierie Venete decided to implement two strategic investments.

At the beginning of 2025, a new wire rod line was commissioned at the Sarezzo plant, fed by the existing rolling mill. The new line will produce coils of quality wire rod, covering the diameter range d 5.5-25 mm at a speed of up to 110 m/s, thus expanding the company's product portfolio.

In January 2025, a contract was signed for the supply and installation of a modern Electric Arc Furnace with a newly developed ferro-alloy adduction and exhaust gases treatment plant at the Padua site. The plant will enable Acciaierie Venete to produce 750,000 t/year. The project envisages the installation of technologically advanced packages that will allow steel production by applying the ‘zero-man-around’ concept, with a significant reduction in consumption and, consequently, in emissions.

Virgin Iron carriers for Electric Arc Furnaces– Technologies, constraints and opportunities for the steel supply chain in Italy

The transition towards low CO2 emission steel production involves an increasing use of high quality scrap for producers currently relying on the integrated cycle from iron ore. This evolution will reduce its availability for current users, increasing the use of "Virgin Iron carriers" in the feed mix of Electric Arc Furnaces: pre-reduced iron (COLD DRI or HBI) and pig iron. Their production also requires reducing CO2 emissions, impacting therefore the steel producers who use them in electric furnaces (Scope 3 emissions).

SMS group will present solutions to address the challenges of this scenario, examining the sustainable decarbonization of "Virgin Iron carriers" production technologies, their efficient and flexible use in Electric Arc Furnaces, highlighting the production process features that affect their quality and total cost for the user.

“AdriatiCO2”: the first CO2 capture and storage project kicks off in Ravenna

“AdriatiCO2,” along with only 10 other Italian applications, is among the winning proposals - supported by the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, and deemed interesting by the Climate Directorate General - selected among those eligible to receive funding under the European Innovation Fund.

The project, led by the Marcegaglia group, aims to nominate Ravenna as a strategic hub for achieving decarbonization goals, ensuring the capture of more than 110 thousand tons of CO2 and avoiding its dispersion into the environment.
